Speaker Placement |
|
What is the best way to set up my speakers? Other that a speaker’s design there is nothing that affects an audio systems sound more than the room and the positioning in that room of the speakers.
All speakers should be placed at an equal distance from the listening position with the speaker’s high frequency driver or Tweeter at ear height. It’s recommended that you use identical speakers for each channel in a home theatre setup but this is often not possible so experimentation with placement is inevitable.
The closer you place a speaker to corners, wall and ceiling intersections, and wall and floor intersections, the stronger the bass output. This can help to improve the bass response of smaller speakers but can also add too much bass. Moving a speaker a few inches can often make a big difference in sound.
One of the most important considerations in a speaker systems performance is the acoustics of the room it is being placed in. The shape of your room and the furniture in the room will affect the sound you hear.
Having many bare surfaces can cause reflections that can make the sound harsh. Adding carpeting, soft furniture and drapes can help.
Choosing the shape of the room is often not an option but if so avoid shapes that are perfectly square or have one dimension exactly twice another. These rooms can cause “Standing Waves” or resonances that can color the sound. |
